Earth Day underwater cleanup

Volunteers are coming together from the Tacoma dive community to support the environment this Earth Day. The cleanup will be held at Point Defiance Boathouse in Tacoma. 810 pounds of trash were removed from the waterways last year. This cleanup is part of an ongoing effort to conserve marine life as well as preserve the environment. Scuba diving is an enjoyable hobby that can be promoted and shared with others.

To remove fishing gear from Tacoma's waterfront, organizers plan to get kayakers and divers together. After the net has been removed, divers will transport it from the water with a boat lift. Wounded Warriors can help participants remove large quantities of trash and other debris. The organizers believe the cleanup will protect our waters and offer a unique experience.

Rockfish survey

Scuba divers can help save threatened rockfish species by participating in a community-based rockfish survey at Tacoma SCUBA. This dive is part Harbor WildWatch citizen science collaboration with NOAA. Survey participation is open to all divers. The training is done during the dive brief. The participant must be certified to take part in night diving.

WDFW began a multi-year mark-recapture study near Westport, Washington, in 1998. The study includes a tag-recovery monitoring system for sport fishing that allows five annual releases of black rocksfish. These fish were released from pinnacles that were fished by Westport charter fishing boats. Two wire tags with codes were placed in the opercular muscles of the fish for individual identification.

Easy exit with just pounds of trash

The waters around Commencement bay are a great place to go scubadiving in the greater Tacoma region. Earth Day was celebrated by 47 pounds of trash collected by volunteer scuba divers. Octopuses, fishing net, and glass bottles made up the majority of the garbage. The Marine Science and Technology Center of Highline Community College (MaST) organized the clean-up. The waters around Des Moines were cleaned up by the MaST in a previous cleanup.

Observation on wounded bull sea-lion

A dive group from Tacoma, Washington, had the privilege of witnessing an incredible sight while scuba diving. Scuba divers were stunned to see a bull sea lion wounded by an arrow. The animal sustained a shark bite wound and was blind. Bjorn was then transported to the Marine Mammal Care Center Los Angeles. Rescuers helped him gain some weight. Bjorn was named for a character in "Vikings" TV series. This mighty creature weighs nearly 400 pounds and is now residing at the Tacoma Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

A Tacoma dive group experienced this spectacular sight in October. The group was astonished to see a sea lion in action for the first time. Observations also reveal the playful nature of sea lions. The sea lion pups will often play in the water with divers and form groups of like-aged friends. The pups like to play with divers as well, jumping into the sea to give them toys or interact with bubble streams.
